Many businesses and organisations utilise electrical and mechanical plant and equipment, which can range from air compressors to gas engines, playground equipment to portable appliances, oil burner units and centrifugal pumps, to control panels, switchboards, and switchgear.
Ireland's SI No. 299 of 2007 (Part 3): Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 places duties on employers for ensuring the safety and health of their employees and also the public, if they are at risk from those work activities. This includes electrical safety.
Periodic engineering inspections of workplace plant, machinery and equipment form a vital part of an employer’s duty; ensuring the health, safety and welfare of their employees and workplace visitors. Inspections also ensure employer conformity to health and safety regulatory requirements and, ultimately, add value by helping the business to operate efficiently.
A requirement of the Regulations is that, in many cases, electrical and mechanical plant and equipment is subject to statutory, periodic 'thorough examination' by a 'Competent Person'.
