Dave Firstenberg

Dave Firstenberg is the Chief Underwriting Officer at HSB. He leads the corporate underwriting function across all HSB Group entities, and he is responsible for defining the underwriting appetite and ensuring the portfolio of business stays true to that appetite. He also identifies growth opportunities, helps innovate HSB’s product suite, anticipates and reacts to market trends, and drives profitability across the enterprise.

He joined HSB in September 2020 from The Hartford Insurance Group. As Executive Vice President and Chief Underwriting Officer, he oversaw Product and Underwriting across all the company’s Property/Casualty business segments and served as an advisor to the InsurTech sector.

Dave began his career at The Chubb Corporation, where he rose to the position of Chief Underwriting Officer, Commercial Lines Division. Subsequently, he led business transformations from Divisional leadership roles at Zenith/CalFarm Insurance, CGU/OneBeacon, and The Hanover. Prior to joining The Hartford, he was Chief Executive Officer of Canal Insurance where he led the turnaround that transformed the business platform, restored underwriting profit, and strategically repositioned the company.

Dave earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Haverford College, and he is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He has served as an officer-level trustee for several arts organizations.
