Pivot toward a more resilient future

Adaptation and mitigation measures can help society better withstand the consequences of extreme weather

Extreme weather resilience

When it comes to the effects of extreme weather, the future will look very different. Avoidance is a thing of the past. Instead, we must all face the future with confidence, optimism, and a focus on securing our ability to adapt to change.
Pivot toward a more resilient future
Extreme weather events are hitting more frequently and with greater intensity in many parts of the world, and the risks we face are more uncertain. Confronting this reality, however, creates an opportunity to recover quickly and even stronger than before. Resilience—reducing vulnerability to adverse human and economic impacts—is achievable.
~2bn
People affected by flood
Significant flood risks threaten the lives and livelihoods of almost 2 billion people - nearly a quarter of the world's population.
~$18bn
In insured losses from wildfire
In California, the Campfire event, caused US$ 18bn in insured losses, the costliest wildfire on record worldwide.
~$7bn
In insured losses from hail
In 2022, hailstorms in France alone caused losses of US$ 7.2bn.
~$2tn
In losses from tropical cyclones
Tropical cyclones have caused the death of nearly 420,000 people and have inflicted nearly US$ 2tn in losses.

Adapt to the reality of extreme weather

Extreme weather will continue to impact society. From creating personal burdens on individuals and families, to generating complex repercussions in the global economy. But there is something we can do about it.

We can take physical measures to protect against the disasters we know will come—making improvements to homes and business structures, enacting stronger building codes, restoring the coral reefs and mangrove forests that buffer coastlines, and protecting communities with infrastructure like levies and firebreaks. And to prepare for the unforeseen disasters, financial measures can be taken to transfer and mitigate risk—thereby lessening the financial burdens—in collaborative ways.

Solutions for a resilient future

As society continues to adapt to the realities of extreme weather, the demand for innovative risk management solutions has never been greater.

While we can't entirely avoid the consequences of extreme weather, we can take meaningful steps to reduce vulnerabilities and offset the financial impacts of the physical losses that can't be prevented.
