Jorge Pardo works at the intersection of sculpture, architecture and design, searching for the functional in a work of art and for the artistic value in a utilitarian object. He designs pieces of furniture, lamps, light installations, creates spatial sculptures, and designs rooms.

In his paintings, too, Pardo experiments with the meaningfulness of aesthetics. His biomorphic forms, which are in the tradition of the design history of the 1950s to 1970s, are reminiscent of design drafts that were used at the time as fabrics for furniture upholstery, curtains or clothes. In combining functionality and aesthetics, Pardo does not follow any utopian or rational dogma like the teachings of the Bauhaus. Rather, Pardo's works refuse to be categorised in any way. They consciously play with the transgression of art and design and challenge us to reflect on traditional values in a new way.

Jorge Pardo first studied at the Art Center of Design at the University of Illinois Chicago, then from 1984 to 88 at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He works as a designer and artist. His first solo exhibition took place in 1988. Solo shows followed in the USA, Europe and Japan.

Jorge Pardo (born 1963 in Havana) lives and works in New York.
