After studying painting at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich with Rudi Tröger, Scarlet Berner (born 1955 in Berlin) began working as a freelance artist. Her work is always about sharpening consciousness and taking a closer look at the world around us. For this purpose, Berner usually uses foreign, found photographs, which she overlays with her own pictorial motifs. The result is a dialogue between the existing and her own artistic idea.
This is also the case in the work Sträucher (Biermann 1929 + SB 2010) from the series Regeneration. The mesh of intertwined, snow-covered branches and twigs is not immediately recognisable at first glance, due to the coarse grid. Only from a distance does the motif develop. The impression of rather unreal, almost mystical scenery is created. By reducing it to just a few elements, Berner creates a sense of calm and stillness that invites the viewer to reflect.
Since 1982, her works have been presented in solo and group exhibitions and are represented in important collections, including the Bavarian State Painting Collection and the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich. In 1986, Scarlet Berner was awarded the Photography Prize of the City of Munich.
