Gert and Uwe Tobias studied with Walter Dahn at the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts from 1998 to 2002 and achieved international fame as an artistic duo. Of fundamental importance within their oeuvre are the hand drawings. This medium, which the two brothers mastered with virtuosity, is the starting point for all their works. The drawings in turn give rise to their prints, above all oversized woodcuts with an almost magical presence.

For their colourful, often surreal-looking fantastic pictorial worlds which oscillate between abstraction and figuration, Gert and Uwe Tobias draw inspiration from art history, from the folk culture of their homeland, from Christian iconography and mythology, as well as from objects and images of everyday life and subculture.

Gert and Uwe Tobias, who were honoured with the Cologne Fine Art Prize and the important HAP Grieshaber Prize in 2007, show their works internationally at solo exhibitions. The shows at the New York Museum of Modern Art (2007), the Kunstmuseum Bonn (2008) or the Kunstmuseum Ravensburg (2013) are examples worth mentioning.

Gert & Uwe Tobias (born 1973 in Kronstadt, Romania) live and work in Cologne.
