In the Journal of Insurance Medicine, Munich Re’s Dr. Tim Meagher examines the rise of multi-cancer early detection (MCED) tests and the growing question of whether they should be classified as “genetic” within the context of insurance regulation. Drawing on definitions from leading health organizations, Dr. Meagher establishes that MCEDs are indeed genetic tests. However, their utilization by life insurers depends on the interpretation of genetic bans and the understanding of the difference between germline and somatic testing. He illustrates this by examining the legislation in Canada, the UK, and Australia.
