HSB in the community

The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company is committed to improving the quality of life in our communities. We support this effort through:

  • Direct corporate donations;
  • Our employees’ participation in fundraisers and volunteer opportunities;
  • Matching our employees’ charitable gifts.

HSB places a high value on improving the quality of life in Hartford, its home for more than 140 years, and the cities where we have branch offices. HSB believes businesses that are dedicated to the community reap more benefits than simply their own prosperity and growth. They help to improve the ultimate bottom-line – life – by creating a place where everyone wants to live, work, and grow.

Hartford Steam Boiler’s commitment to the community is quite significant relative to its size. HSB’s grants benefit a wide range of organizations that affect many facets of life — the arts, education, health, and civic responsibility. HSB believes that these are the pillars that support a strong, vibrant, and thriving community. In addition, we have a very generous matching gift program that doubles our employees' donations to educational and medical organizations and facilities.

Employees Reach Out

HSB employees give back to the community through volunteering. Employees participate in the United Way’s “Day of Caring” anuually and other charities throughout the year, with the company encouraging volunteerism by granting employees paid time off for volunteer activities. Nearly five percent of employees serve on boards of directors of nonprofit organizations. Over the years, HSB employees have served on boards of such organizations as:

#1 in Workplace Campaigns

Each year, HSB raises significant funds through workplace campaigns for the Greater Hartford Arts Council and the United Way Community Campaign.

Employees truly embrace these campaigns. HSB has retained its position as No. 1 United Arts Workplace Campaign Company among companies with 500 or less employees for the eighteenth consecutive year, and we were the No. 2 company among all companies in the Greater Hartford area – a formidable achievement considering the corporate giants that are based in Hartford. In 2007, HSB was the first company in Greater Hartford to raise $1 million for the arts.

Employees also plan fundraising activities in support of our United Way Community Campaign in Hartford and other cities where we have offices. In 2012, HSB was recognized for its outstanding effort and creativity by the region's United Way chapter and was awarded "Best In Show" for the best overall workplace campaign.

These events have become so successful that other Hartford-area companies have come to visit Arts Week at One State Street and our United Way events to gain insight into how they can improve their own campaigns.
