See through darkness, clouds, and smoke for precise flood data

What if you had to rely on fate for your flood data? Wait for clear skies to capture accurate satellite images? ICEYE chooses technology over chance. As Anke Sielker, Head of Reinsurance Practice at Helsinki-based ICEYE, says, “We are not dependent on luck.”

The company’s radar technology pierces clouds, smoke, and darkness to deliver precise, reliable flood insights. Their constellation of satellites produces high-resolution images of observed flood impact areas across the globe.

Location Risk Intelligence now integrates ICEYE’s expert flood data into the platform’s Events feature as an option. Users can anticipate future flood risks, monitor live events, and understand past flooding to protect investments. When every second counts, precise flood data gives you the clarity to act fast. We asked Anke Sielker to describe the services in more detail.

What’s the first thing you tell people about ICEYE and what you deliver?

The first thing we tell people is that ICEYE delivers unmatched visibility during natural catastrophes by using the world’s largest constellation of Synthetic Aperture Radar, or SAR, satellites.

This technology allows us to capture high-resolution images of any location on Earth, regardless of weather or daylight, and to do so on average every hour. We provide reliable, timely flood insights that transform uncertainty and inform decisions for insurers, corporates, and emergency responders.

How is ICEYE’s flood data unique compared to public sources?

Accurate and robust flood data is crucial for mitigating financial and operational risks caused by extreme weather events. ICEYE stands out by offering high-resolution, consistent, and reliable coverage worldwide.

Very few participants on the market are able to take multiple images from space of a natural catastrophe to this level of detail. That is one of the biggest differentiators. We’re the only ones who actually focus on building a private earth observation solution for natural hazard events.

Who typically uses such data? What benefits or advantages does it provide?

On the commercial side, insurers, banks, real estate firms, and corporates are primary users of ICEYE’s flood data. Insurers use ICEYE data to optimize fast event response and crisis management, underwriting, assess exposure, and validate claims, for example. They can quickly confirm flood extent to expedite payouts. Banks evaluate property risk for lending decisions. Real estate firms leverage the data for site selection and asset protection.

In general, users benefit from improved risk modelling and proactive disaster management. During flood events, they can communicate with their clients quickly and allocate resources more effectively.

How does ICEYE data support users before, during, and after flood events? How can it improve business performance?

ICEYE provides historical flood footprints for trend analysis, near real-time monitoring during events, and forecasting insights. Within Location Risk Intelligence, flood details are delivered in two components.

Flood severity forecasts indicate areas at risk up to 96 hours in advance. Observed flood footprints provide flood extent and depth of past events. This comprehensive approach reduces uncertainty when your business success depends on historical or real-time flood awareness.

Please tell us more about the technology behind ICEYE flood event data.
ICEYE uses Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites to capture high-resolution images with observed or forecasted impact. The design enables long imaging dwell times at extremely high resolution. Also, it provides the ability to flexibly manoeuvre the antenna and scan the radar beam across wide areas.

This allows ICEYE to deliver multiple imaging modes that permit the broadest possible range of operational applications. These images are processed into flood maps and analytics, providing precise water depth and extent.

In dense urban areas, where tall buildings present a challenge to the satellite angle being able to accurately capture the flood depth, ICEYE integrates additional earth observation sources such as press images, aerial imagery, and digital elevation models. A dedicated analytical team validates and enriches the data.

Would you say there is a flood risk that is commonly overlooked?

One major unseen risk is business interruption, which often exceeds physical damage costs. For instance, prolonged downtime in manufacturing due to flooding can lead to significant revenue loss. ICEYE’s data helps identify these vulnerabilities early, enabling preventive measures.

Why is it significant that this data is integrated into Location Risk Intelligence?

The partnership allows ICEYE’s data to enhance Location Risk Intelligence, creating a more robust solution for clients. Integration means users can access flood insights seamlessly within their existing workflows. Over the next five years, I believe this collaboration with Risk Management Partners will enable us to set new standards in risk management to use this innovative data at speed.

What do you personally find interesting or rewarding about this work?

Working on ICEYE’s flood solutions is rewarding because it directly contributes to reducing disaster impacts and protecting communities. The ability to combine cutting-edge technology with meaningful benefits for society is highly motivating. In the insurance industry, we are creating an ecosystem to make innovative data accessible and usable. Overall, it’s about making a tangible difference in recovery and resilience.

What is the Events feature?

The Events feature in Location Risk Intelligence helps you monitor and analyse historical and live climate risk events including tropical cyclones, earthquakes, wildfires, and flooding.

  • Find out when and where natural hazards have hit your sites and portfolios in the past, for accurate risk assessement.
  • Receive predictive alerts, assess exposure, and take action before damage occurs.
  • Get regular updates during live events to help you reduce property damage, minimise production downtime, and safeguard your investments.
