    General description

In line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement, the global energy system is undergoing a fundamental transformation that is expected to accelerate in the years ahead:

    • Most new power generation capacity will be provided by onshore and offshore wind energy as well as solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.
    • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) will be deployed on an increasingly large scale to balance electricity supply and demand over time.
    • The decarbonisation of sectors that cannot be directly electrified will require the large-scale production of green fuels, such as hydrogen, e-fuels, and green ammonia.

These developments introduce a range of new and evolving risks. Renewable energy assets, for example, are particularly exposed to extreme weather events, while BESS installations and emerging hydrogen-based applications carry significant fire and explosion hazards. In addition, the rapid pace of technological innovation creates risks that cannot be fully assessed based on historical loss data alone.

This evolving risk landscape presents new challenges for the insurance industry and underscores the need for rigorous risk assessment during the underwriting process. This seminar explores the insurance implications of the energy transition, provides relevant loss examples, and offers practical guidance for underwriters when assessing key technologies required to support the transition to a low-carbon economy.
