Andrew Buchanan was born in 1977 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
He studied at the University of Cape Town, graduating in 1999 with a Bachelor of Business Science in Actuarial Science with 1st Class Honours. Subsequently, he completed his Master of Philosophy in Economics at the University of Oxford in 2002. He is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and is a CFA Charterholder.
Andrew Buchanan began his professional career in January 2000 as a trainee actuary at Old Mutual Life Assurance Company in Cape Town. After completing his graduate studies in the UK, he joined Oliver Wyman in London in September 2002, advising insurance clients on economic capital modelling, risk appetite frameworks, Solvency II implementation, and risk-adjusted steering. From 2010 onwards, he served as Head of Group Risk Oversight at Prudential plc in London.
Since September 2011, he has been with Munich Re. He has held several strategic leadership roles within the Group. His first position was as Chief Risk Officer for the Divisional Unit Life and Health 2, covering UK and Ireland, Asia Pacific, Australasia and Africa. In the period May 2013 and June 2014, he served in parallel as Interim Chief Financial Officer for the UK Life Branch. Mr. Buchanan went on to work as Chief Underwriting & Pricing Officer for Global Life Re as from May 2015.
In May 2017, he was appointed Reinsurance Chief Financial Officer at Munich Re. In this role, he was in charge of financial management of the segments Property & Casualty Reinsurance; Life and Health Reinsurance; and Global Specialty Insurance. Additionally, he was responsible for the Central Divisions Reinsurance Accounting; Reinsurance Controlling; Central Reserving; Central Life Reserving; and Corporate Claims.
Andrew Buchanan has been a member of the Board of Management and Chief Financial Officer of Munich Reinsurance Company since January 2026. He manages Financial & Regulatory Reporting; Corporate Finance & Performance; Integrated Risk Management; Group Taxation; and Investor & Rating Agency Relations.
