Insurance built for the energy transition

The renewable energy sector is expanding rapidly across Europe and beyond. Frequently asked questions

Renewable energy insurance can cover physical damage to energy assets, including turbines, solar panels, and associated infrastructure, as well as machinery breakdown, business interruption and delay in start-up arising from an insured physical loss, resulting in a financial loss for project owners or lenders.

Delay in start-up (DSU) insurance protects project owners and lenders against revenue losses arising from a delay to a project's commercial operation date, where that delay is caused by an insured physical loss or damage event during construction or commissioning. It is a common requirement for project-financed renewable energy developments.

Yes. Our underwriters consider risks at both the construction and operational stages of a renewable energy project. The structure and scope of cover will differ between phases, and our teams are experienced in supporting both placements.

Our underwriters consider a range of renewable energy technologies, including onshore wind, photovoltaic power (PV) plants, battery energy storage systems, hydro power plants, biogas, green hydrogen, grid development / connectivity, among other emerging clean energy assets. Each technology carries its own risk characteristics, which our underwriters assess on a case-by-case basis.

Munich Re Specialty works exclusively through brokers and intermediaries. Given the technical complexity of many renewable energy placements, early broker engagement with our underwriting teams is strongly encouraged.
