Underwriting

Underwriters communicate our risk appetite

A skyscraper built in an earthquake hot zone, cargo traveling pirate-infested waters – what could possibly go wrong? For our underwriters writing such risks is part of their daily diet.

Making the world of risks manageable

Constantly mastering new challenges, working flexibly and thinking out of the box - our underwriters may come from different scientific disciplines such as law, economics and mechanical engineering, but they all have these core characteristics. With their efficient risk transfer solutions, they support our customers so that they can fully devote themselves to their business.

Underwriting needs experience, imagination & analytical thinking

Our underwriters are promoting Munich Re in various projects.

Targeted analysis & business intuition

Before signing a contract, our underwriters gather all relevant information on the risk in question and analyze it carefully. For reinsurance solutions, they assess the risk of original policies and evaluate insurance portfolios. In assessing large, complex individual risks, they also draw on their specialist knowledge of industry, economics and law, and, if necessary, on the knowledge of Munich Re's global teams of experts.

The main tasks of our underwriters are to calculate premiums and work out contract terms that are acceptable to both sides. For this, they sometimes conduct intensive negotiations with their clients before finally drawing up and signing the contract.

Current topics in the field of operating risks

Complexly structured companies require more sophisticated insurance products to adequately protect themselves against the risk of business interruption. For example, tight vertical integration complicates risk management. Insurers are called upon when it comes to proper risk assessment or claims evaluation.
Even pharmaceutical companies are not immune to regulatory risks. If a government agency orders a production stop, Munich Re's tailored business interruption insurance protects against financial losses. It provides cover without preceding property damage and actively supports companies in risk management. This makes quality, manufacturing and supply chain risks controllable.
Since the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic, the world has been in a state of emergency. The drastic measures taken in the affected countries to contain the pandemic highlight the seriousness of the situation - for societies, the economy and each and every one of us.
