Solar Power Project

Leading by example

We believe that one of the best ways to lead is by example. Munich Re achieved carbon neutrality in its Munich headquarters in 2009, and targets 2015 to be carbon neutral throughout its worldwide reinsurance group operations. To help meet this goal, we completed installation of a 2.5-megawatt solar power generation system at our Princeton area headquarters in September 2012.

Our system consists of high-efficiency solar panels on a carport structure. It provides shade for a large portion of our parking lot and has reduced our annual electricity costs by almost $500,000. Most importantly, our solar energy system benefits the environment with an annual carbon footprint reduction equivalent to removing more than 400 cars from the road. We also benefit from the opportunity to sell Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) on the public market.

This and other energy-saving projects we’ve undertaken over the past several years reinforces our commitment to being an environmentally conscious corporate citizen and employing innovation and technology in addressing the challenges facing our company, our clients and society.
