Energy Reduction

The professionals within our Corporate Facilities department conduct our business operations and manage corporate properties in an environmentally sustainable manner, governed by reasonable financial limitations, to support the best long-term interests of the company, its employees, and the environment.

Employees in our Corporate Facilities department seek out training and education to ensure we maintain the highest standards. For example:

  • We are a national member of United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
  • Facilities staff members are active members of the New Jersey Chapter of the USGBC.
  • Individuals in Corporate Facilities attend USGBC training, the Greenbuild National Conference, and regularly attend classes offered as part of the LEED® Accredited Professional  training curriculum.
  • Individuals in Corporate Facilities have attended International Sanitary Supply Association (ISSA) green cleaning training.
  • Licensed commercial pesticide applicators and operators on the Corporate Facilities staff are certified by New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and trained in integrated pest management (IPM) to help reduce the use and impact of pesticides on campus.
  • Members of the Corporate Facilities staff are Certified Energy Auditors (through the Association of Energy Engineers) and Certified Building Operators (through a national program overseen by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Council), responsible for identifying additional areas for energy savings.
  • Corporate Facilities also has Universal Refrigeration Technicians on staff (as certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency), to ensure all refrigeration on-site is handled in a environmentally responsible manner.

Responsible Operations
Buildings on our Princeton campus underwent major renovations to the lighting, lighting controls, building automation systems, and air conditioning systems (chiller plants) in 2009 and 2010 . As a result, we reduced electricity usage by more than 40% in 2011 compared to the 10 year average (1997-2007).

In fact, the substantive nature of our programs and expertise have been recognized by the NJBPU Clean Energy Program with a $1.4 million dollar cash grant to subsidize some of our high-yield energy efficiency projects.

Some of the measures we've taken to reduce energy consumption include:

  • Our Information Technology (IT) department switched the company from a CRT monitor standard to flat panel monitors in 2007.
  • IT installed a hardware management program to automatically shut down all PC’s after regular business hours.
  • Where possible, IT and Facilities direct purchases of appliances and equipment that are ENERGY STAR rated.
  • All vehicles specified for purchase by Facilities are hybrid, high fuel efficiency, or low emissions.
  • Three of the four buildings on campus have been converted to white roofing membranes, thereby reducing the heat load on the facilities and the associated air conditioning needs.
  • Three of the four buildings on our campus have been outfitted with high-tech window film to better reflect the thermal heat energy from the sun, thereby reducing the need for air conditioning and electrical consumption.

Our affiliate, American Modern Insurance Group (American Modern), has installed occupancy sensors at its facilities in about 95% of the offices in its main building, reduced the amount of water used for irrigation, and automated the lighting systems in another building on its Amelia, Ohio campus.

Responsible Processing
The insurance products offered by our affiliated companies in the U.S. are responsible in content as well as execution.

American Modern, for example, launched its TREE2 program to encourage its 1.6 million policyholders to enroll in electronic billing. The goal is to reduce the amount of paper used in billing, both from the company and also from its customers.

Hartford Steam Boiler offers a range of on-line services to its agents, insurance company clients and engineering services customers.  These services are aimed to make doing business with HSB easier and faster, and with less impact to the environment.
