    HSB is an industry leader in the inspection of boilers, pressure vessels and other types of equipment - dating to the very beginning of our company over 150 years ago.

    We believe that loss is not inevitable - it can be prevented. This principle has been at the heart of our company from the beginning. In fact, inspections and loss prevention came first at HSB, with our insurance backing up the judgment of our inspectors.

    Our inspectors are among the most experienced in the industry and have a reputation for being knowledgeable and thorough. Following rigorous training and testing, our inspectors are certified by the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors.

    Where other insurers may not include this service, or charge extra for an inspection, HSB makes jurisdictional inspections a built-in benefit of our equipment breakdown coverage. HSB's nationwide network of inspectors complete more than 500,000 inspections each year.

    How do I schedule an inspection?

    • Have your service order or case number to reference.
    • This form is only intended for single locations. If you need support for more than one location, contact 800-333-4677 instead.
    • If you are a UK or Ireland based customer, complete our UK&I inspection request form.
    • Anti-fraud requirements apply to this request.

    If you answer “yes” to any of the following questions, you may need an inspection:

    • Do you have any heating or process boilers at your location?
    • Do you have any large (200,000 Btuh) water heaters?
    • Do you have any pressure vessels at your location, such as commercial air tanks and hot water tanks?
    • Do you have any air conditioning/refrigeration at your location? (This does not include household refrigerators/freezers or window air conditioners.)

    The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors compiles a Synopsis of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Laws, Rules and Regulations. For more information about the National Board and its Synopsis, click here

    External Boiler Inspection

    • Schedule the appointment when the boiler operator or maintenance personnel are available to perform any required testing of controls and safety devices.
    • Don’t forget to inform the operator of the date and time.
    • Make sure the current certificate of inspection is posted.
    • Provide the inspector with clear and safe access to equipment.
    • Be sure to have boiler up and running

    Internal Boiler Inspection

    Some boilers require periodic internal inspections to comply with jurisdictional requirements.

    In addition to the tips listed above, the following actions should be taken by the customer to prepare for an inspection:

    • Arrange to have your boiler open and cooled. Remove manhole and handhole plates.
    • Clean all boiler surfaces thoroughly, internally and externally.
    • If the boiler has a low water fuel supply cut out, have the device dismantled for a complete examination of all parts.
    • Disconnect the feed line connection at the boiler.

    HSB provides jurisdictional inspections of boilers and pressure vessels as a built-in benefit of all our Equipment Breakdown coverage programs. Nearly all states and cities have requirements for the periodic inspection of boilers and pressure vessels. Codes vary from state to state, but generally boilers and other pressure equipment must be inspected by commissioned inspectors at specified intervals for continued operation. These requirements make the business owner responsible for inspection compliance. Helping insureds meet these inspection obligations is part of HSB's value.

    As part of our Equipment Breakdown insurance programs we:

    • Proactively identify insureds that have jurisdictional inspection services requirements;
    • Schedule and perform boiler and pressure vessel certificate inspections in accordance with state or municipal jurisdictional requirements;
    • Provide recommendations where hazardous conditions are noted;
    • Offer advice to improve equipment operation, maintenance and reliability.
