Ireland's SI No. 299 of 2007 Regulations and Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 place duties on people and companies who own, operate, or have control over lifting equipment.

A requirement of the Regulations is that, in many cases, equipment used for lifting is subject to statutory, periodic 'thorough examination' by a 'Competent Person'.

A wide range of equipment is covered by SI No. 299 of 2007 Regulations; from lifts to cranes and hoists, fork-lift trucks to mobile elevating work platforms, as well as and many other types of lifting plant.

SI No. 299 of 2007 Regulations also cover lifting tackle and accessories (for example, chains, slings, eye bolts, etc).
