The protection of human rights is an obligation that we strive to meet, in line with internationally accepted human rights principles. It is part and parcel of our approach to corporate governance, our definition of which includes economic, environmental, and social requirements.

Munich Re’s aim is to identify risks relating to human rights violations at an early stage and to minimise them as far as possible within our sphere of influence. Our human rights strategy therefore comprises a range of preventive measures with which we endeavour to manage our risks relating to human rights in advance. We strive to pursue a holistic approach and to have an overview of all relevant human rights topics. Our actions are regularly reviewed, updated and adopted as part of our ESG governance.

By implementing these measures, Munich Re complies with the requirements set out in the LkSG.

Munich Re (Group): Declaration of Principles on Respecting and Protecting Human Rights

The Board of Management has issued a declaration to respect and protect human rights for the Munich Re Group. This declaration underscores Munich Re’s commitment to human rights, as defined in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, in the International Bill of Human Rights and in the Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights of the International Labour Organization (ILO). The guideline documents the fundamental requirements for respecting human rights and describes how human rights risks are managed in our business activities, with the goal of creating a common understanding and foundation for protecting human rights in the Group long term. In this regard, we strive to regularly improve the guideline and the related due diligence processes, and to expand our risk assessment.

    Grievance procedure

Anyone can report human rights risks and breaches of duties to respect human rights using our whistleblowing portal. Whistleblowers can access our portal 24/7 worldwide, via our intranet or the publicly accessible websites. This allows relevant information to be shared securely, confidentially and, on request, anonymously.  Reports of potential human rights violations that reach us via other channels (e.g. email) are handled using the same principles and processes.

Every potential case is followed up in accordance with a procedure set out in internal guidelines. If we learn of human rights violations in our business relationships or value chain, a decision on appropriate and effective remedial action is taken.

    Reporting and communication

The responsibility we take for protecting human rights is reflected in the internal and external reports we publish every year on progress and decision-making processes.

Our corporate due diligence requirements are set out in various internal guidelines, codes and work instructions.

The publicly accessible combined non-financial statement in the Annual Report 2025 (from p. 129) demonstrates how Munich Re upholds its responsibility for respecting human rights. This also serves as Communication on Progress to the UN Global Compact (CoP),and to the Principles for Sustainable Insurance (PSI) as well as for reporting based on the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI).

In addition, in line with regulations, we publish a statement signed by the Board of Management as part of Munich Re's Human Rights declaration, the UK Modern Slavery Act and on the Australian Modern Slavery Act.
