Return to Lloyd’s: the embodiment of the future of underwriting

On Monday 18 September 2023, Lloyd’s re-opened its doors to an upgraded and refurbished underwriting floor. Instantly, we found the energy and the trading buzz between underwriters and brokers to have returned, almost with a “back to school” feel. 

The underwriting floor at Lloyd’s is such a unique part of our industry. We’ve been eagerly anticipating what the new boxes looked like; and how the old and new would be combined. Being in the centre of this marketplace enables our broker partners to meet in person with our underwriters to discuss specialty business lines risks and negotiate solutions to solve client problems. 

Catching up with Caroline Monnickendam, Senior Cargo Underwriter and Henry Blackett, Senior Terrorism and Political Violence Underwriter on their first day back in their 457 box, Munich Re Syndicate CEO, Thomas Artmann said “The floor is open again. We are back. It’s exciting!

“Some of the touches have kept that heritage but it feels like we have a box designed for what we need to do today. It feels like the embodiment of the future of underwriting. 

“Throughout my time at Munich Re, it's always been about innovation and thinking about how we can make improvements for our customers. We’re certainly never standing still."
