Supporting Communities

Traditions of engagement and volunteering

To us, corporate responsibility means active responsibility towards our employees, the environment and the community in which we live and work. We have a long history of engaging employees and encouraging cooperation across businesses, communities and generations.

We take a strategic approach to our commitments as a corporate citizen. In addition to charitable activities at our business unit locations, we support projects at national and local impact that have a concrete connection with our business; and we are involving our employees to an increased extent wherever possible.

In our role as “corporate citizen”, we act as sponsor, donor and co-shaper in assuming responsibility and addressing social challenges. The active governance of our social commitment is one of the three pillars of our corporate responsibility strategy.

Special Donations
When disaster strikes, Munich Reinsurance America and our employees are ready to give and lend a helping hand. With donations to help victims of the devastating 2010 Haiti earthquake, the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake & Tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and the attack on the World Trade Center in 2001, we were reminded of the precious and precarious nature of life and have given generously to the reputable organizations that assist victims of such tragedies.

Community Involvement

Eden Foundation
We sponsor the Annual Eden Family 5K Race and one-mile Fun Run/Walk.  For the past several years, we have supported Eden as the primary sponsor of the event, by donating services and hosting fundraisers leading up to the event, and by encouraging employees and their families to participate.

March of Dimes March for Babies
Each year, we support the March of Dimes March for Babies. This community event is one of the biggest fundraisers for important research and programs that help babies begin healthy lives. March of Dimes helps mothers have full-term pregnancies and researches the problems that threaten the health of babies.

Susan Komen Race for the Cure
The Race for the Cure benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the largest private funder of research dedicated to breast cancer.  Each year, we sponsor our team for the event and fund the entry fees for the first 100 participants, which can include employees, their family members and friends.

Holiday Giving
Our Wish Tree program is an important part of our culture that affords employees the opportunity to make holiday wishes come true for underprivileged children, home-bound senior citizens in the local area, and women recovering from addictions.

Employee Programs

Corporate Matching Gift Program
Our Matching Gifts program encourages and maximizes employees' donations to colleges, universities, hospitals and medical centers.

Dollars for Doers
We believe it is vital to the health of every community that citizens be active in local organizations. Through the Dollars for Doers program, the company endorses this participation by making grant money available to qualifying organizations in which our staff are active as volunteers.

Insurance Charitable Organizations

Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF)
The insurance industry is dedicated to assisting people in times of need. The Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation helps communities and enriches lives by combining the collective strengths of the industry to provide grants, volunteer service, and leadership. The organization’s philosophy is: Plan nationally, implement locally. Munich Re is a long-time active participant of the organization both in making a financial commitment and providing staff expertise to serve on committees.

In June 2013, Reinsurance Division president Pina Albo was awarded the inaugural Women in Insurance Luminary Leadership Award by the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation. The Award recognizes an individual for their selfless leadership and significant contributions to the development of the future leaders, particularly women, in their own organizations as well as the broader insurance industry.
