Public and non-profit entities, self-insureds, and pools have unique risk management needs. As a specialist in this market, we respond with custom products and services that help manage risk with forward-thinking strategies.

We adopt a holistic approach by assessing our client's situation across the whole value chain. We share our risk expertise with our risk management and pricing tools, seminars, workshops and publications. Our flexible service model adds value to our products and relationships and ensures clients are always in a position to respond quickly to change. Our range of services include:

Accurately forecasting expected losses and understanding the inherent volatility of commercial insurance products is a key component to every client's risk management strategy. It can mean the difference between a healthy insurance entity and an insolvent one.

We have over 50 members of the American Academy of Actuaries among our staff, including members of both the Casualty Actuarial Society and the Society of Actuaries. They work closely with the underwriting team to help clients make appropriate risk management decisions and get the insurance coverage and support appropriate for their needs. Our dedicated and credentialed actuarial team uses their alternative market expertise to provide a wide range of services that may include analyzing retention level and options, creating custom pricing tools, performing data audits and reviews, and pricing education on topics such as loss development and trend.

We provide expert analysis on natural and non-natural property perils and exposures, including technical and scientific catastrophe risk modeling issues. We evaluate and work with you to address catastrophic exposures arising from property and casualty lines of business.
Our unbundled approach allows you to use TPAs approved by us. Our claims experts provide oversight of TPAs on primary program business. Our ongoing evaluations can generate recommendations to the TPAs to ensure the continued quality of claims handling, claims staff, and claims systems.

Our Claims professionals are among the most experienced in the industry. We work in close partnership with clients and our underwriting teams to provide solution-oriented guidance and feedback. Then we take that a step further, working with you to create and define loss prevention strategies and optimize the underwriting process. Our expertise is available to help clients solve a wide range of claims challenges. We can help you to:

  • Ensure the adequacy of your reserves
  • Better manage catastrophic injury claims
  • Successfully resolve coverage issues
  • Review policy exclusion language
  • Improve settlement evaluation and negotiation processes
  • Enhance effectiveness of a claims unit through due diligence reviews, claims and operational audits and similar activities

Casualty claim seminars

Our claim professionals partner with University of Wisconsin Graduate Business School to offer a practical and hands-on program in casualty claims handling. The seminar is designed to increase the level of expertise and skill among primary carrier claims departments, thereby improving their loss experience.  It stresses decision making and principled, fair claims processes--not only doing things right, but doing the right thing. And by sharing their new knowledge with colleagues, participants address a gap often found in today’s claims departments between experienced and novice adjusters.

Claims reviews

Our detailed claims reviews provide you with information to help improve your operations. We offer analysis that highlights possible loss control issues. Through evaluation, we help ensure losses are being allocated correctly. Additionally, we evaluate and provide direction to TPAs (or in-house claims handling) as to the quality of their claims staff and systems.

Construction defects claims management

Construction defects claims against builders have soared nationwide in recent years. Because the cost of defending these types of claims has become a significant problem for insurers, we have a construction defects specialist on staff to assist our clients. Our actuarial and claims consultants can help clients to quantify their ultimate construction defects liabilities, establish dedicated construction defects claim units, develop claims-handling “best practices,” and create litigation and case management strategies, all of which can result in significant cost savings.

Monitoring developing exposures

As a leading reinsurer, we have the opportunity to view developing exposures from the diverse perspectives of our clients and the broad knowledge base to help address them. Our claims consultants can be invaluable resources to our clients who need up-to-date information on the legal, insurance, reinsurance and contractual issues surrounding developing exposures. Our claims professionals are often teamed with underwriters, actuaries, and contract wording specialists to help clients develop comprehensive solutions as new issues arise.

Asbestos, environmental, other latent and mass tort claims management

Our A&E, Other Latent and Mass Tort claims staff brings two decades of experience in managing, evaluating and resolving these difficult and complex exposures. They share their experience with clients and can assist them in a variety of ways, including:

  • Seminars on all aspects of these claims
  • Analysis and evaluation of claims operations, processes and procedures
  • Coverage issue analysis and defense
  • Exposure and reserve analysis assistance on a single claim, group of claims or entire claims portfolio
  • Assistance with claim and / or litigation management strategy
  • These services will help you to more efficiently and effectively manage these high-impact claims.

Negotiation skills training

This workshop provides in-depth analysis of the claims negotiation process by examining a variety of successful techniques, strategies and negotiation psychology. Attendees gain experience and confidence through hands-on participation in staged negotiations. The goal of the workshop is for attendees to effect more favorable settlements, thereby containing loss and expense dollars for their companies.

Our claims specialists, experienced in evaluating coverage issues, will assist clients in reviewing proposed or existing wording of policy forms and agreements. We will offer comments, suggestions and practical insight on contract language. The process includes comparisons with other available contract language and culminates in a meeting with the client to discuss our findings. Our comments, suggestions and recommendations should be viewed as an additional resource for consideration by the client company and are not to be considered as a legal opinion or a substitute for legal counsel.
Our insurance experts develop innovative insurance solutions to cover risks with unusual or unique characteristics. We work with you to tailor coverage to meet the special needs of your homogeneous group or association program business.
Our custom reports range from general market trends to specific market segments to individual state profiles. You can use our services to gain competitive intelligence, track current industry trends, develop strategic plans, and define new business opportunities.
These services help identify, prevent, and mitigate the impact of risk. Services include loss control assessments, causal analysis, trend analysis, training, and assistance in establishing/upgrading loss control programs, work site assessment, and assistance in selecting third-party specialty consultants.
Our global presence keeps us informed of best practices throughout our industry. We share these insights and work with you while providing an independent evaluation of your underwriting operations. When we agree on recommendations for improvement, our advisors remain available to assist you in implementation.
