    Our UK-based team has global responsibility for overseeing the reinsurance of longevity risk, developing and implementing the Group's approach to this complex risk across all markets and jurisdictions. By assuming longevity risk, we provide pension providers with financial stability and confidence, enabling them to meet their long-term commitments to retirees and ensure secure retirements, ultimately securing a more stable retirement for people worldwide.

    Our team's capabilities encompass:

    • New Business Support: We leverage our specialist knowledge to deliver a range of solutions that enable our clients to mitigate their longevity risk exposure.
    • In-Force Management: We uphold the highest technical standards, while adopting a solution-focused, and collaborative approach. This enables us to optimise the performance and sustainability of our legacy book of treaties, ensuring its continued vitality and resilience.

    Senior Longevity Actuarial Manager

    The Protection team at Munich Re provides comprehensive support to our life insurance clients in the UK, encompassing both retail insurance and group employee benefits. Our reinsurance solutions cater to traditional business lines, including life insurance, critical illness cover, and income protection. Furthermore, our team is dedicated to bridging the widely reported 'protection gap' by developing innovative insurance solutions and exploring alternative distribution channels.

    Our Business Development (BD) team plays a crucial role in building and maintaining strong relationships with our clients, acting as the public face of the company in the UK life insurance market. 

    Key responsibilities of the BD team include:

    • Collaborating closely with clients to drive the success of Munich Re's product, sales, and marketing strategies.
    • Cultivating valuable client and external stakeholder relationships.
    • Demonstrating thought leadership and a deep understanding of clients' businesses.
    • Liaising with clients on reinsurance-specific matters, such as developing sustainable products, managing risks, and responding to client requests and needs.

    I work in Munich Re UK Life Branch's Protection department, managing mortality, critical illness, and disability risks in the life insurance industry. As Client Operations Manager, I build strong relationships with clients and internal stakeholders, to understand their unique needs. I enjoy collaborating with diverse professionals across underwriting, claims, pricing, and finance to drive seamless operations and inform strategic decisions. My role provides opportunities for continuous learning and allows me to be involved in varied parts of the protection insurance value chain.

    Client Operations Manager

    The Structured Reinsurance team specialises in designing bespoke solutions to ensure our arrangements flexibly meet our clients’ liquidity and capital needs. By providing tailored capital and liquidity solutions, we empower our clients to achieve their strategic objectives. The team comprises individuals with diverse experience ranging from consulting, investment banking and advisory backgrounds. 

    Some of the responsibilities a member of our team may have include:

    • Liaising with our clients to provide robust solutions that meet their very specific capital or liquidity requirements.
    • Working alongside our internal pricing, legal and risk management teams to ensure successful onboarding of new treaties and ongoing administration.
    • Research reinsurance opportunities keeping in line with the ever-evolving financial reporting framework and regulatory environment.
    • Monitor the performance of our inforce portfolio and take appropriate action where necessary.
    • Participate in industry events to stay informed on the latest trends and developments within the (re)insurance sector and occasionally share our expertise at such events.

    Being a part of the Structured Reinsurance team has given me the opportunity to experience all aspects of a reinsurance transaction. Right from working with the client to understand their needs, developing a viable solution, seeking the required approvals, and finally monitoring the performance of the transaction. It makes the entire process even more rewarding to see the client meet their strategic targets because of a solution you helped put together.

    Structured Reinsurance Actuary

    Our Pricing department plays a critical role in supporting the business, with team members typically involved in the pricing of new deals, assisting in the negotiation of commercial terms both internally and with clients, and ongoing monitoring of the business we write.

    We have dedicated pricing teams for each of our business lines – Protection, Longevity, and Structured Reinsurance – who work closely with our commercial teams to secure pricing tenders and deliver solutions and value to our clients.

    The Pricing department also comprises several specialist teams, including:

    • A Basis Development team, which ensures our pricing terms of trade remain relevant and up-to-date for the risks we price and accept.
    • A Predictive Analytics team, which supports clients with business insights and predictive modelling to drive commercial value.
    • An Infrastructure team dedicated to developing and maintaining systems and tools to ensure they are robust and efficient.

    My role is to lead our pricing of the longevity risk on pension schemes. The ability for people to be able to solve problems, work together, and contribute on making the way we do things better, gives not only personal satisfaction but also a sense of striving together for the same purpose.
