For twenty years now, the geoscientists at Munich Re have compiled a detailed review of the previous year's natural catastrophes. Selected catastrophe portraits and background analyses describe the current risk situation, trends and market developments from the insurance industry's perspective. Figures from the NatCatSERVICE database indicate the severity of the events in humanitarian and financial terms.

In focus

2017 was a wake-up call. After a number of relatively benign years, natural disasters in 2017 caused overall losses of US$ 340bn. Insurers had to pay out a record US$ 138bn in losses.
