Geointelligence opens up new possibilities

Natural hazards such as windstorms, earthquakes or floods regularly result in major claims. But where do these events occur – and what is the probability of them happening? Insurers can find answers to questions like these with NATHAN Risk Suite from Munich Re: now even faster and more accurate.

NatCat-expertise on demand

Browser-based geotools are the key to this wide range of services. Using these tools, you can assess the natural hazard exposure of single risks as quickly and accurately as entire portfolios. And thanks to the latest internet technologies, there is no longer any need today for elaborate installations or updating of databases on the user's workstations. Instead, using the online tools in NATHAN, underwriters and claims managers can access the latest map and satellite images at any time, along with information on current Munich Re damage zones.

The data for an entire portfolio can be analysed for geographic risk exposure, even on a real-time basis. From the original geocoding (in other words the process of simply identifying and visualising risk locations), a genuine geoprocessing system has now been developed. It makes geointelligence an integral part of insurance business – along a large part of the value chain. The spectrum extends from product development and geomarketing all the way to risk and claims management.

Increasing level of integration for comprehensive geoprocessing

The more effectively and deeply the browser-based geotools are integrated into the insurer's IT landscapes and business processes, the greater are the benefits for the user. The new version of NATHAN Risk Suite sets the standard in this regard: starting with a more user-friendly design for the online tools, optimised maps and analysis functions, through to new compatibility with Microsoft Excel and Access data.

The key new features at a glance

  • NATHAN Single Risk Online: The tool for assessing single risks now features a single risk assessment report with optimised map function. The user can see all the key risk factors at a glance – clearly laid out and in a new design.
  • As of now, data formats like Microsoft Excel and Access can be directly processed with NATHAN Portfolio Risk. The user simply uploads their data onto the NATHAN platform. Prepared location lists further minimise the administrative effort and increase the level of efficiency for the user.
  • An additional innovation is the map function in NATHAN Portfolio Risk Online. The exposure of a portfolio can be clearly visualised by combining this function with the natural hazard zones system developed by Munich Re.

Summary:
With the new NATHAN Risk Suite, primary insurers are better prepared than ever to meet the challenges of the future. The tools provide a much greater level of risk transparency and help meet the requirements of Solvency II, national supervisory authorities, rating agencies and customers alike. The enhanced level of integration and data depth is also the key to the development of new risk models. These are needed in the light of social phenomena such as the rise in global terrorism and its implications for environmental liability insurers. Technological change also ensures there will be new challenges. New accumulation risks are appearing, for example, as a result of the rapid increase in the number of photovoltaic plants and offshore wind farms, and these can now be assessed faster and more accurately using the tools in NATHAN Risk Suite.

The development is ongoing

In order to provide enhanced added value for our customers through a greater level of geointelligence in risk management, Munich Re is steadily expanding the tools in NATHAN Risk Suite. Further innovations are already in the pipeline for 2012, including such highlights as a new, even more need-based risk report for NATHAN Portfolio Risk Online and improvements to ensure greater ease of use and functionality with all the NATHAN Online applications.
