Management Team

Executive Committee

The management team of Munich Re Syndicate Limited oversee activities of Syndicate 457 at Lloyd’s and is driven to set industry standards in service and performance. It also supports operation and management of the service companies of Munich Re Specialty Group Limited.

Thomas Artmann
CEO, Munich Re Syndicate Limited

Thomas Artmann has 23 years of experience in insurance, graduated as a lawyer from Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Germany. He began his career in 1991 as a facultative marine underwriter with global responsibility, later specializing in the reinsurance of P & I business. In 1996 he assumed responsibility for managing the facultative marine underwriting department, the P&I treaty business and the marine claims unit. Thomas joined the Executive Management of Munich Re in 2001. From thereon he served as Underwriting Manager for the global marine business as well as underwriting executive for Lloyd’s marine. Since 2004 he has been a member of the board of Munich Re Syndicate Limited as a non-executive director. In 2014 Thomas became the Chief Operating Officer of Global Marine Partnership and in July 2015 was appointed Managing Director of Munich Re Syndicate Limited.

Charles Burgess
CEO, International Distribution Companies, Munich Re Specialty Group

Charles Burgess joined Munich Re Specialty Group in October 2016 as the Managing Director for the Services Companies. He is a board member of Munich Re Specialty Group and a number of the Service Companies. Charles began his career in accounting, and he entered the insurance sector with Benfield, before moving on to Zurich Insurance. He has founded a number of new businesses in the insurance space, including DirectAsia, one of the first online Insurers in Asia. Charles is a qualified accountant and holds a degree in economics.

Tim Coskun
Risk and Compliance Director

Tim Coskun is a Chartered Accountant, having qualified in 1991 with Neville Russell. After working for the Serious Fraud Office, he joined the Regulatory Division of the Corporation of Lloyd’s in 1993 where he worked in a number of different roles. Tim joined Munich Re Syndicate Limited in January 2001 as Compliance Officer and Company Secretary and was appointed a Director of the Company in October 2001. He has been a member of the General Insurance Standards Council Disciplinary and Enforcement Panels and is currently a member of the Lloyd’s Enforcement Panel.

Greg Guelfand
Group Chief Financial Officer

Greg was a member of the Great Lakes UK Board from 2007, having worked for the Munich Re Group in Australasia since 1999. He joined Munich Re Syndicate Limited in April 2014 as Group Chief Financial Officer.

Dominick Hoare
Chief Underwriting Officer and Active Underwriter

Dominick Hoare started working in the Lloyd’s market in 1985 as a graduate trainee with the Willis Group. He joined Watkins in 1994 as an Energy Underwriter, and he was appointed as a director of Munich Re Syndicate Limited in 1997. Today, he is the both the Chief Underwriting Officer and the Active Underwriter for Watkins. Dominick is a past Chairman of both the Joint Rig Committee and the Energy Committee of the International Union of Marine Insurers. He has also served on the Board of the Lloyd's Market Association, as well as the Executive Committee of the International Union of Marine Insurers.

Alison Maxwell
Claims Director

Alison Maxwell has worked in the Lloyd’s market for 25 years and has been with the Syndicate since 1986. Prior to joining the Syndicate she worked as a claims broker for two Lloyd’s brokers. Alison is a member of the Joint Marine Claims Committee, Claims Focus Group (CFG) and is a member of the organising committee for the Lillehammer Energy Claims Conference.

Christopher Simson
Group Head of Human Resources

Christopher Simson joined the Munich Re Group in 2003. He began his career in insurance after university where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Business. Since then Christopher has held various Human Resources Leadership positions for the Munich Re Group in America and Germany. Christopher joined Munich Re Syndicate Limited in July 2015 as Group Head of Human Resources. 

Bryan Young
Group Counsel

Bryan Young has a law degree and qualified as a solicitor in 1985. On qualifying he joined Clyde and Co and became a partner in 1989. He specialised in reinsurance disputes and acted in some high profile matters including Hill –v- M&G and Bonner –v- Scott (Aon 77). He joined Munich Re Syndicate Limited in October 2012 as Group Counsel.
