Technology alone no longer enough for insurtech MGAs

The insurtech market is entering a new phase as managing general agents (MGAs) shift their focus from rapid growth toward underwriting discipline, insurance expertise, and sustainable performance.

Across North America, a select group of MGAs is using automation and artificial intelligence while working with reinsurance capacity providers or insurance carriers. Over the past decade, the insurtech MGA market has evolved through three distinct waves.

The first wave centered on automation and digital distribution, moving parts of insurance distribution from human-led underwriting into automated tools.

The second brought companies with clear underwriting strategies that used technology to scale. A third wave is now emerging, driven by AI agents and more advanced automation.

Each wave has challenged the traditional carrier model by embedding more risk-selection and underwriting processes within technology platforms.

From growth to profitability

Technology has helped MGAs operate more efficiently, but its value extends beyond reducing staffing needs.

An MGA designed around automation from the outset may be able to build and manage a portfolio with a relatively small team compared with a business relying on more manual processes.

The benefits can also extend to customer experience. Insurance buyers increasingly expect immediate quotes and seamless online interactions similar to those available in other industries.

This combination can improve cost efficiency while creating a faster, more convenient experience for clients.

At the same time, the market's emphasis has shifted from growth toward profitability. MGAs, capacity providers, and venture capital investors are increasingly aligned around bottom-line performance and the health of the underlying portfolio.

For reinsurers and carriers, that means building a healthy portfolio from the outset.

Underwriting talent and disciplined decision-making are therefore essential, rather than focusing primarily on sales and technology.

Underwriting expertise remains central

While technology allows smaller teams to scale efficiently, automation and AI tools are becoming widely available. Simply using them is no longer a meaningful differentiator.

Proprietary technology can still play an important role, but access to technology alone is less likely to set an MGA apart.

A stronger competitive advantage comes from combining technology with insurance expertise. That includes answering fundamental underwriting questions: which risks to accept, how to set appropriate guidelines and exclusions, and how to make sound risk-selection decisions.

This makes underwriting expertise especially important for insurtech MGAs. Technology can accelerate the process, but the consequences of poor underwriting decisions may not become apparent for several years.

Technology can help an MGA move quickly, but disciplined underwriting provides the direction and control needed to manage that speed responsibly.

Specialization and proven performance

The growing availability of technology is also supporting a more specialized MGA market. Focused businesses can develop deeper knowledge of their risks and customers and tailor products to specific market segments.

Brokers can use specialized MGAs to place particular or unusual risks rather than relying on one provider to cover a broad range of business.

Meanwhile, capacity providers are becoming more selective about the MGAs they support, prioritizing disciplined growth over aggressive expansion. Proven performance is increasingly important, particularly for teams launching new businesses. Demonstrating prior experience in building a profitable portfolio can provide confidence that the team can succeed again.

The strongest MGA relationships are built on a shared understanding between the MGA and its capacity provider.

That includes alignment on the appropriate pace of growth, underwriting appetite, product offering, and expected loss ratio.

Looking ahead, the next generation of successful insurtech MGAs will need to combine technological innovation with deep insurance expertise, underwriting discipline, specialty-market knowledge, and strong carrier relationships.

AI agents and advanced automation may open new possibilities, but they cannot replace the traditional insurance work required to build and sustain a healthy portfolio.

As the insurtech landscape evolves, the most accomplished MGAs will master the intersection of insurance, technology, and specialization, rather than following a traditional tech startup trajectory.
