One year after the earthquake in Japan

On 11 March 2011, the most powerful earthquake in the history of Japan devastated the north of the country. One year further on, Munich Re reviews the threefold catastrophe of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident. The event and losses are presented from the perspective of the global reinsurer, and the consequences for a future approach to risks described. An international team of experts met in October 2011, with Munich Re as their host, to discuss the catastrophe event from the scientific, political, socio-economic and insurance perspectives. You can follow the discussion in a video or read a summary of the discussions. In addition to these recent assessments, you will also find basic information on prevention and earthquake-resistant construction.
