Rupprecht Geiger

Born 1908 in Munich, Germany
Died 2009 in Munich, Germany

Konkav gerundet, 1973

400 x 480 x 70 cm

Rupprecht Geiger was a master of monochrome. He explored colour in its existence as a mental field of force. His interactive experiments were studies of human perception, and he conceived of colour as an element that releases energy, like fire, water, earth and air.

In addition to several works on paper, Munich Re owns one of the artist's few large-scale sculptures. In its monumentality and formal balance, the sculpture exudes great calm and strength. Rupprecht Geiger left the metal surface mat, unprocessed and colourless. The "mental field of force" of which Rupprecht Geiger speaks, manifests itself not in the colour, but in the form and its presence in space.
