Born 1949 in Saint-Mandé, France
Lives and works in Berlin and Paris

Liuba, 2011

Acrylic on canvas
160 x 140 cm

Bernard Frize understands painting to be a process. His abstract paintings always reveal the traces of their production. For his painting experiments, the artist uses unconventional techniques and materials for exploring the possibilities of paint on a background. His works are often created using an ensemble of assistants who pass the brush around. Frize directs and supervises this interaction like a choreographer. He focuses his attention on the indispensable communication, coordination, teamwork, synchronicity and the rhythm of the painters.

In "Liuba", the coloured rectangles resemble a texture woven into the canvas, thus reflecting the surface on which they are painted. The direction of the paint application can be seen in the structure of the colour fields. Although the surface of the image is sealed with glossy resin, a sensual impression of depth, plasticity and transparency is created.
