Axel Hütte

Born 1951 in Essen, Germany
Lives and works in Düsseldorf

Tabernas, Spain, 1995

186 x 236 cm

Axel Hütte usually discovers the motifs for his landscape photographs during his travels. But these are not documentary photos. They are rather like meditative visions that move somewhere in the realm between fiction and reality. The eye viewing the work wavers between the expectation of discovering something concrete, and the desire to lose itself in the ambiguity of space. As we only rarely find a hint that might reveal the dimensions or the photographer's location, Hütte deludes the observer of any relationship with reality. The artist spares no effort or time in finding this perspective. With a large format camera, he travels to the remotest parts of the earth, climbs onto glaciers, hikes on the ice, flies over mountaintops in a helicopter, always on the lookout for images. The photos for "Tabernas" were taken during a trip through Andalusia.
