Pipes, 2012

Acrylic lacquer on plywoodpipe
240 cm, diameter: 13.5 cm

In the new "Pipes" series, the step towards sculpture has been taken. The wooden pipes, painted in different colours, stand up to 2.5 meters high, or are suspended in space. Their surfaces are only partially covered, using impasto paint application, so that the entire pipe image only reveals itself with the viewer's own movement through space. As in other works by Schulz, the concept here is also deliberately ambivalent: the pipes are both painting and sculpture, they are attached both to the surface and in space, they are both individual image and serial object. They demand viewing distance and proximity, immobility and motion alike.
