Lives and works in Vienna

Untitled (Ach ...), 2011

Acrylic on canvas
150 x 200 cm

Stefan Sandner's works, mostly large-scale, are reminiscent of oversized notepads. The sentences and words that the artist tosses onto the canvas in an expressive gesture are often verbal finds, handwritten notes he discovered somewhere, such as fragments from Kurt Cobain's diaries, anonymous scribblings on beer coasters or notes from friends. There are quotations of known or unknown authors, whom Sandner chooses with intent. In inflating the handwritten originals to oversized dimensions and snatching them from their original situational context, the scraps take on an aesthetic dimension. The content and meaning of the words is overshadowed by the impact of their presentation. The message becomes the image. But not only that: the aesthetic rendering paradoxically shifts the content of the rather insignificant, extraneous messages to the centre of perception.
