For the "Los Angeles Portraits" series, Roland Fischer set his unclad models in a swimming pool. Neither gesture nor mimicry betray the person's individuality. In the monochrome blue of the still water Fischer frees the human countenance of all features. The face looks like a shell that is at the same time a receptacle for everything: proximity and distance, inside and outside, façade and core. This coexistence of opposites, the "polarity of the visual", as Fischer calls it, defines his work.
