Peter Krauskopf

Born 1966 in Leipzig, Germany
Lives and works in Berlin

Altes Bild, 2012

Oil on canvas
56.5 x 46 cm

The painting entitled "Altes Bild" is strongly reminiscent of a landscape, despite its degree of abstraction. Peter Krauskopf creates this effect by his virtuoso handling of hues and the cumulative layering of paint. The surface shows old layers of paint that are partially covered by a grey sediment. Here, the colours display their complete materiality. Holes, cracks and edges are visible, and reveal the "interior" of the image. Like a geologist, the observer can discern the different layers, in some places looking beyond the black, then purple and green, deep down to the pink, and thus gaining a glimpse into the genesis of the work.
