Nancy Spero

Born 1926 in Cleveland, USA
Died 2009 in New York, USA

Relay IV, 2001

Hand printing, collage on paper
37 x 252 cm

Nancy Spero sought critical discourse on art and created a significant body of work from a woman's perspective. Her distinctively female imagery is an expression of artistic engagement with the woman's image.

Collages of female figures from different eras and cultures appear on long, horizontal and vertical paper banners, hand-printed with stamps. Although Spero began with text-picture collages with emblem-like figures and typewritten text fragments, in later years, she completely abandoned the written word and focused solely on the body and sign language of her protagonists.
