Jiri Georg Dokoupil

Born 1954 in Krnov, Czech Republic
Lives and works in Berlin, in Prague and in Rio de Janeiro

Untitled, 2007

Bronze
80 x 106 x 48 cm

Dokoupil is an artist who refuses to fit into the traditional classifications of art either stylistically or technically. He constantly deals with new means of expression, experimenting with different genres, from painting to video, and even sculpture. His oeuvre meanwhile includes works of 100 different styles and techniques, and due to this unpredictable variability, he has come to be known as "The Sphinx".

Dokoupil created the "Hooks" series from a number of oversized clothes hooks. In the tradition of pop art, he presents the rich diversity of hook forms with ironic wit, and by greatly inflating the size of these commonplace objects, makes them into artworks with their own unique aesthetic quality. The highly polished bronze lends a golden gloss to the object and converts it from a utilitarian object into an artefact.
