Red-orange lines cross on a light background, rigorously cutting through the monochrome space. But it is not the lines that the artist drew, it is the white squares, that shine out of the glowing red of the fibre like identical islands. This intensive colouration radiates far beyond the borders of the artwork, into the space around it, and it drapes a reddish veil over the white areas.

Heimo Zobernig plays all the instruments of artistic expression, analytically and with wit and humour. His minimalistic works are reminiscent of Mondrian’s abstractions or Sol Lewitt’s grid structures. Zobernig knowingly draws from the arsenal of historic art forms, designs spaces, installations, sculptures, pictures, to find the new “by shifting the known”. His multilayered works captivate with reduction and conceptual austerity. And it is in this simplification that his sensual and aesthetic power unfolds.
