Paradise, 2006

Oil on canvas

Many of Endy Hupperich's paintings are based on the collage principle. From different set pieces, playful motifs emerge that seem to have evolved from a surreal dream world. In "Paradise", the laconic title of the work gives way to irony, because despite the presence of tropical palms and flying balloons, dreams of paradise seem rather far-fetched. The diffuse landscape appears too fragile before the dark, impasto background. And the grotesque face on the right edge is too irritating. Often only at second glance do Endy Hupperich's motifs reveal their absurd combinations, with their inherent, subtle humour.
