Ninfa - Nuχεia (Nycheia) , 2013

Direct print, Dibond aluminium, shellac
183 x 240 x 4.5 cm

"Ninfa - Nuχεia (Nycheia)", named after a nymph from Greek mythology, depicts a dense growth of trees and bushes, bowed over a river in its shady course. Dark green tones dominate the work, shrouding the scene in a mysterious atmosphere.

Located in a historic garden in the south of Rome, "Giardino di Ninfa", which already attracted artists and writers in the Renaissance, is the subject of Elger Esser's recent series. Built on the ruins of the ancient city of Ninfa, medieval walls, gentle waters and lush plant life merge in this garden to create a unique and poetic sanctuary where time seems to stand still. Elger Esser captures this unique landscape in subtle compositions. His large-scale photographs, devoid of people, lure the viewer into a timeless, almost magical world. Immersed in a matte soft light, his scenes almost appear to have been painted.
