Cornelius Völker

Born 1965 in Kronau, Germany
Lives and works in Düsseldorf and New York

Bücher, 2008

Oil on canvas
275 x 175 cm

In his works, Cornelius Völker explores the possibilities and limits of painting. With the use of vibrant colours, he finds formulations that vacillate between the abstract and the figurative. The artist works in both large-scale formats and small-scale series to explore different variations on a subject. He elevates seemingly incidental events, objects or activities of day-to-day human life, to a motif.

Cornelius Völker displays virtuosity in his handling of brush and paint. The objects and motifs, appearing monumental through the type of composition, begin to disintegrate when approached, gradually disappearing into the paint. The eye of the observer is immersed in another world, free of any representational form whatsoever: this is the world of pure painting.
