Lives and works in Munich

Indie, 2013

Acrylic on tarpaulin
600 x 147 cm

In the top of a tree that seems to grow out of nowhere, a young man sits reading a book. With the virtuosity of an old master, Andreas Chwatal drew his motif with a paint marker and spray paint on a six-metre long tarpaulin. The scenery shines through the shimmering gold and brown parts of the work as if stemming from an alien world.

Nature, which plays a key role in Chwatal's oeuvre, is shown here as a place one longs to be, similarly as we know it from the Romantic period. But that place where Chwatal longs to be is not untouched, wild nature, but a park; a space in nature cultivated by man based on his personal imagination. For the artist himself, this is the embodiment of the ideal place. The title "Indie" also refers indirectly to the terms "longing – nature – ideal". The youth culture that arose in the 1980s is reminiscent of the hippie movement of the 1960s, which sought alternative ways of life.
