Abu Dhabi: Munich Re's pioneering role
In late September 2005, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi passed a law introducing
mandatory health insurance for all expats in the state and partial privatisation
of the health sector.
In cooperation with the "General Authority for Health Services" (GAHS), Munich Re established the "Daman National Health Insurance Company", the first private health insurer in Abu Dhabi.
Munich Re and the Abu Dhabi government have thus introduced a compulsory insurance concept organised by the private sector. Daman offers an individual solution for basic health insurance. It is structured to reflect the Emirate's particular conditions and requirements and also uses MedNet's regional network of service providers.
The experience that Munich Re is gaining here complements the knowhow of the Divisional Unit: Health and is excellent preparation for things to come. Daman could well assume a pioneering role in the Gulf region.
