Brief guide: How to operate NATHAN
The NATHAN screen or user interface consists of several segments. In the upper segment, you can select one of the three modules Natural Hazard Maps, Major Disasters or Country Profiles. When NATHAN is started, it automatically loads the Natural Hazard Maps module.
Determining what natural hazards play a role at a particular location
NATHAN's core functionality is the interactive world map displayed in the centre of the screen.
To zoom in any part of the map, activate (click on) the Zoom icon (magnifying glass) in the toolbar above the map. Continue in the same manner to examine ever smaller areas to determine what natural hazards play a role there.
To have NATHAN display an overview of the relevant natural hazards in a selected area or location, click on the Lightning icon in the toolbar above the world map and then click on the desired location in the map window.
To activate a filter for a specific country, select the first letter of the country's name in the letterbar above the world map. Then select the desired country in the menu on the left or enter a city name in the search field. Once you have selected a region, you can click/unclick the boxes for the relevant natural hazards in the Map Themes segment on the right-hand side of the screen and then click on the Apply button at the bottom to have the natural hazards displayed on the map.
Filtering catastrophes according to time periods
To obtain a historical overview, you can select the Major Disasters module. In this case, the options displayed in the segment on the right include not only natural hazards such as earthquakes and windstorms, but also settings for filtering historical catastrophes according to time periods, specifying the sorting order and generating reports. To have the information you want displayed on the map or printed out in a report, select the appropriate fields and then click on the Apply button.
Calling up information on a specific country
Another very helpful feature is the up-to-date country database. To call up information on a specific country, select the Country Profiles module and then the desired country in the menu on the left. The screen then displays clearly structured information on the country in the categories: Geography, Government, Demography, Economy, Transportation and Natural hazards. To display the information in a particular category, click on the corresponding button.
Any information in the three modules can be printed out or e-mailed simply by clicking Print Page at the right-hand edge of the screen.
