Scenario 1: Wind

A large-scale winter storm sweeps across Europe. Winds exceeding force 12 and wind speeds of more than 120 km/h leave a trail of devastation: roofs are blown off, trees uprooted, the fire brigade is working around the clock – a chaotic situation. In only a few hours, insurance companies’ phone lines are flooded with calls.

On the second day after the event, thanks to the CatLoss Estimation Service, the Head of Claims can already give the Board of Management and the press the all-clear: although the storm raged over a large area, only smaller regions were affected by the high wind speeds. Some 1,000 insured risks are located in this area – insurance is anticipating claims in the range of €1.2–1.5m. The Head of Claims sends several experts to the scene two days later. On site, they photograph the damaged houses and contact the owners, who are positively surprised, because they had not even reported the damage to their insurers yet.
