Chronology of loss events

Willem van der Zwan, January 2007

A fire that broke out during repair work caused the total loss of the Dutch trawler Willem van der Zwan (built: 2000; 9,375 GT; 142m long). The insured loss is estimated at more than US$ 40m.

Lindoe NB No. 203 (Emma Maersk), June 2006

Another fire, this time during the construction of the Emma Maersk, one of the world's largest container vessels (93,500 GT, approx. 13,000 TEU, 397m long): it caused damage especially to the superstructure, 95% of which was already complete. The loss, which is estimated to be in the two-digit million range, was due to a fire which may have been started by welding work.

Pride of America, January 2004

Pride of America (80,439 GT, 283m long) suffered immense damage while she was moored at the fitting-out quay. A strong gale first made the cruise liner list slightly, with the result that water entered service openings on the starboard side, the side towards the fitting-out quay. This made the vessel list even further and the four lower decks including the engine room were flooded. Pride of America sank to the bottom of the harbour. It took several months to salvage the vessel and repair the damage, costing the insurers some US$ 225m.

Al Riyadh, January 2004

During repair work at a shipyard, a fire on the mega-yacht Al Riyadh (built: 1978; 60m long) caused a loss estimated at US$ 30m.

Westerdam, October 2003

A fire on deck 6 of the new cruise liner Westerdam (86,000 GT, 290m long), which was already at the fitting-out quay, spread to several other decks, causing a loss estimated at more than US$ 60m.

Typhoon Maemi, September 2003

Typhoon Maemi damaged more than twenty ships at various Korean shipyards. In some cases, the tropical cyclone wrenched newbuildings off the fitting-out quays. The overall insured loss is estimated to be US$ 30–50m.

Costa Fortuna, April 2003

During the construction of the cruise liner Costa Fortuna (101,350 GT, 272m long), a fire broke out on deck 8 and spread to decks 7 and 9, causing damage totalling an estimated US$ 20–40m.
