Insurability of damage to power plants

This table shows a selection of the most important risks and the insurance solutions available for them. The green fields show the standard covers available on the market.

The light orange fields indicate risks for which cover can be offered after consideration on a case-by-case basis. These covers require either special accumulation control or precise analysis of the individual risk. Nuclear risks and terrorism risks are insured by special insurance pools, for example.

The risks indicated by the dark orange fields cannot be insured at present, as the necessary experience and field-testing of these plants is lacking. Internal failures involving renewable energy plants are not insurable at present, for example. Once these plants have stood the test of time, these risks too will be insurable.

The red fields show risks that are generally excluded: intent and gross negligence on the part of the policyholder or its representatives (but not on the part of an employee or worker), war, nuclear power, and normal wear and tear.
