Centre of Competence for Workers' Compensation Insurance

With its expertise and experience in the field of insuring industrial accidents and occupational diseases, Munich Re believes it has a fundamental duty to use the latest knowledge and findings to seek solutions which will help ensure an efficient system, adequate profitability and financial stability for all concerned — employers, employees, insurers/risk carriers and the state.

National markets in particular frequently lack the requisite expertise and have thus been able to profit from Munich Re's experience and knowledge.

For example, we have conducted analyses which show that various occupational diseases primarily connected with working conditions must also be attributed to certain environmental factors. Other studies have analysed alternative methods of financing.

Only coordinated solutions are successful

In pursuing our objectives, there is one aspect that we consider to be especially important: adapting our solutions to the needs of different countries.

After all, although problems may be similar, we frequently have to deal with a whole range of different parameters in different countries. For example, risk carriers in some countries have to pay out huge indemnification to victims of industrial accidents. Whether this is due to inflation in the medical sector or because court awards are higher than originally expected differs from country to country.

It is therefore essential that the solutions are meticulously coordinated and adapted to specific requirements. This task entails careful assessment of which concept is suitable and necessary in each individual case without giving preference to particular methods of private or public workers' compensation systems.
