Environmental management and communication

The main task of stringent environmental management is to put the environmental guidelines approved by the Board of Management to good effect in all operative processes of the company.

The Environmental Management Unit was assigned the task of coordinating this function in 1999. The Unit is attached to Geo Risks Research, a specialist department within the Corporate Underwriting/Global Clients (CUGC) division.

The Chairman of the Board of Management, Dr. Nikolaus von Bomhard, is also the Board member responsible for environmental issues. Jürgen Fischer, Senior sustainability management, is the Environmental Officer.

Since the end of 2000, the environmental management system has been certified in accordance with European (EC) Regulation No. 761/2001 issued by the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers on 19 March 2001 concerning the voluntary participation of organisations in a joint environmental management and eco-auditing system.

At the end of 2003, our environmental management system was revalidated by an external accredited environmental verifier. We were also certified in accordance with the international standard DIN EN ISO 14 001 - an important precondition for extending our environmental management system within Munich Re's international organisation.
